The Insurance Document That Could Cost You Thousands

Continuing on the topic of red flags to look out for when dealing with insurance companies, I’d like to share an example with you of something that actually happened in our office. In the state of Georgia, liability insurance companies have to offer you the same amount of uninsured motorist coverage equal to the amount of liability insurance coverage you purchased. We had a client with $500,000 of liability insurance, but his car insurance company said that he only purchased $25,000 of uninsured motorist coverage. This was important because he suffered catastrophic injuries and there was only $25,000 available of liability coverage. When we forced the insurance company to prove that he actually signed off on getting just $25,000 of UM coverage, the insurance company then sent him a letter that said, we need you to sign this document to keep your coverage current. That was a very misleading thing to do, and they were attempting to try to limit this man’s insurance. Fortunately, he contacted us and let us know in time where we were able to prevent him from signing that document, and we were able to recover the full $500,000 he was entitled to. That’s a red flag to look out for when dealing with your insurance companies. Do not sign paperwork without talking to your lawyer first.
