Head On Collision Results in $102,500.00 Settlement–and a reminder to elect Uninsured Motorist Coverage

A 21 year-old college student was struck head-on by an unlicensed driver who crossed the center line while attending to her child in the back seat of her vehicle. The collision occurred in Athens, Georgia. The young man suffered, among other things, fractures to three vertebrae in his lower back. He spent 3 days in the hospital following the wreck. Upon discharge, he continued to treat with an orthopaedic doctor and a physical therapist. He was able to make a relatively full recovery, but his medical bills were in excess of $32,000.00. However, the lady who caused this collision carried only $25,000.00 in liability insurance; which is the minimum required by law here in Georgia. Fortunately for our client, he carried Uninsured Motorist Coverage to protect himself against this very type of loss. Uninsured Motorist Coverage is car insurance that a driver may purchase to protect him/herself from being injured by a person who carries no, or very little, liability insurance. If our client had not elected this additional coverage, he would not have been able to recover enough money to pay the medical bills he incurred as a result of this collision. The availability of this additional coverage made it possible for us to negotiate a more appropriate settlement of his claim.

Uninsured Motorist coverage, or UM as it is sometimes called, is not very expensive to add to your car insurance policy. We encourage you to contact your insurance representative to see if you have this very important coverage added to your car insurance policy. If you do not, see how much it would cost to make the addition. We hope you never need it, but if you do, you will be very glad you have it.
